Catholic Relief Services Supports Emergency Response in South Sudan

August 19, 2013 by

Catholic Relief Services is supporting an emergency response by Caritas South Sudan in Jonglei State, where recent violence has caused thousands of people to flee into the bush. The crisis in Jonglei’s Pibor county is the result of an armed rebellion led by David Yau Yau.

CRS is helping to coordinate Caritas South Sudan’s emergency response in Pibor, but had to temporarily suspend its own U.S. government-supported development program in that county due to the insecurity. The large food security program continues in other parts of Jonglei State.

A Caritas article highlights the difficulties of reaching the displaced in Pibor due to the insecurity and because roads have been rendered impassable by the current rainy season.
