Isla Dolores Gomez is a promoter for CRS savings groups in Las Lomas, a small town near the northern border with Haiti in the Dominican Republic. The 40-year-old mother of five never thought of herself as a leader before getting involved in savings groups, but her responsibilities with the savings group showed her she has something offer. A few months after she started her first group, she decided to go back to school to finish her high school degree. She also bought a hair dryer and some brushes with the money she saved. A few nights each week, she turns her her front patio into a beauty salon. The extra money she earns helps to pay the household bills, but it’s much more than that. Now she knows she can depend on myself and has the strength to make life better for herself and her family. Photo by Robyn Fieser/CRSMicrofinance: Lessons in Savings and in Life
