Pope Francis calls for a day of fasting and prayer for peace in Syria and the Middle East

Pope Francis has called for a day of prayer and fasting this Saturday, September 7, for Syria and the Middle East. At the end of the catechesis of today’s general audience, Pope Francis said,

“This coming Saturday we will experience together a special day of fasting and prayer for peace in Syria, the Middle East. I renew my invitation to all the Church to live this day intensely, and from this moment on, express my gratitude to those brothers and sisters, Christians and of other religions, and to men and women of good will who wish to join, wherever they may be and in their own way, in this moment. I particularly urge the faithful and pilgrims in Rome to participate in the prayer vigil here in St. Peter’s Square at 7 p.m., to invoke from the Lord the gift of peace. Let us raise a cry for peace all over the world!”

The staff at CRS join with Pope Francis in the call for prayer and fasting, as we continue to work diligently to respond to the needs of Syrian refugees, who now number more than two million according to a UN announcement yesterday.

  1. […] After two years of escalating violence in Syria, the world’s focus is now fixed there. While more than two million refugees have fled the dangers of their homeland in the last two years and that number is expected to swell in the coming months, Catholic Relief Services and Caritas Internationalis workers have been tireless in responding to the mounting refugee crisis. Pope Francis has asked us to begin our response as we begin all things, with prayer, and he has called us to make Saturday, September 7, a global day of prayer for Syria. […]

I think the general media do not do justice to the messages from Pope Francis – I hope and pray that enough people in the world have heard his plea for prayer and fasting today the 7th September for the suffering men women and children in Syria and all over the world – Eternal Father through Jesus, Mary and the Holy Spirit may we be awakened and stirred by all who are suffering in so many ways and deprived even of the necessary means to give them sustenance. Lord have mercy on us – Mary intercede for your suffering children in exile and for peace in our world which God created for our use and benefit. Priase God – Eternal Father and Creator, Amen.

May God forgive us our trespasses – especially our neglect of the suffering people of Syria – and all human kind who are suffering from hunger, disease, rejection and terrorism.God bless Pope Francis – may we follow in his footsteps as he is following in the footsteps of Christ. Amen.
