Tropical Storm Chantal is moving very rapidly through the Caribbean and is expected to be near or over the Dominican Republic and Haiti later today. According to some forecasts, Chantal could affect parts of Cuba Thursday.
Catholic Relief Services is monitoring its path and is preparing to respond by pre-positioning relief supplies, preparing staff for damage assessments and opening lines of communication with our partners so we can respond quickly and effectively.
Rainfall is a serious concern, as Chantal is expected to produce total rain accumulations of 3-6 inches over the Dominican Republic and Haiti. Isolated maximum amounts of 10 inches are possible.
“With our experienced staff and Caritas partners located in every department, CRS Haiti is well positioned to respond,” said Darren Hercyk, CRS Haiti Country Representative.
