Vatican Radio interviews Bill Canny, CRS’ director of emergency operations, on deteriorating conditions in the countries of the Sahel, particularly Niger. The U.N. is forecasting that in the next 12 months, famine could affect more than 12 million people.
Bill told Vatican Radio that there is “an absolute risk … of high levels of famine” in Niger without a significant intervention from the government and the international community. He says one person he talked to in the affected area gave him a stark warning: “if the government waits too long …we will die.”
