Bishop Donald Hying elected as new board member
Archbishop Timothy Broglio and Bishop Oscar Solis reelected to second terms

BALTIMORE, MARYLAND, Nov. 17, 2021 – During the annual meeting of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops’ (USCCB), a new bishop, as well as two returning bishops, were elected to Catholic Relief Services’ (CRS) Board of Directors.

On Tuesday, Bishop Donald J. Hying of Madison was elected to serve his first term on the CRS board. In addition, Archbishop Timothy P. Broglio, archbishop of the U.S. military’s armed services, and Bishop Oscar Azarcón Solis of Salt Lake City, were reelected to the board. The three men will serve three-year terms to begin in January. In addition, Fr. Michael J.K. Fuller was elected to a five-year term as general secretary of the USCCB. As such, he will continue serving as CRS’ board secretary. His term begins Nov. 18.

“Our board members consistently show their dedication to the most vulnerable people around the world through their support and advocacy,” said Sean Callahan, CRS’ president and CEO. “We are thrilled that Archbishop Broglio and Bishop Solis will remain on the board to help us reach more of those in need, and that Bishop Hying is joining to do the same.”

In 2019, Bishop Hying was installed as Madison, Wisconsin’s fifth bishop. He is a member of multiple USCCB committees, including a subcommittee that provides support to the Church in Central and Eastern Europe.

In 2008, Archbishop Broglio was installed as archbishop of the Military Services, USA. He previously served on CRS’ board from 2009 to 2011. He is completing a term as USCCB secretary and serves on the International Justice and Peace committee. In 2017, Bishop Solis, the first-ever Filipino American bishop ordained in the U.S., was installed as the tenth bishop of Salt Lake City. He chairs USCCB’s subcommittee on Asian and Pacific Island Affairs.

The terms of the following CRS board members will conclude at the end of the year: Bishop James V. Johnston, Jr. of Kansas City-St. Joseph; Mary Jane Creamer; Judge Risë Jones Pichon; and Mark Rauenhorst.

“While these board members may be leaving their positions, the impacts that they have made on CRS will be long-lasting,” Callahan said. “They have been good stewards, having worked tirelessly in service of CRS’ mission. CRS is a better humanitarian organization because of them, and I thank them for their time.”
