BALTIMORE, MARYLAND, Nov. 16, 2023 – At its November Plenary Assembly, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) elected two new board members to serve on Catholic Relief Services’ (CRS) board of directors. Bishop Robert Reed of Boston, MA and Bishop Joseph Tyson of Yakima, WA have been elected to serve a three-year term for the aid agency beginning in January.

“We warmly welcome the two newest members of our board, who embody our Catholic values and are sure to add fresh perspectives and invaluable insights to our mission, enhancing our efforts in serving those in need across the globe,” said Sean Callahan, CRS’ president & CEO.

The latest additions bring the total number of CRS board of director members to 25, with Archbishop Nelson J. Pérez of Philadelphia, PA continuing to serve as board chair and Geraldine P. Carolan of Peachtree City, GA serving as vice chair. Bishop Brendan Cahill of Victoria, TX; Bishop Octavio Cisneros of Brooklyn, NY; Bishop Daniel Garcia of Monterey, CA; Cardinal Joseph Tobin of Newark, NJ; and Bishop Luis Zarama of Raleigh, NC have been reelected to serve second terms. In March, the CRS board of directors elected Richard Anderson of Wayzata, MN as a non-episcopal board member who will serve a first three-year term.

CRS extends its thanks for the service of Archbishop Shelton Fabre of Louisville, KY; Archbishop Bernard Hebda of St. Paul and Minneapolis, MN; and Helen Alvarê, professor of Law at The Antonin Scalia Law School, George Mason University, VA whose terms of CRS’ board of directors expire at the end of this year.

“Both CRS and I acknowledge the significant impact these board members have had on the organization’s governance, its adherence to Catholic principles, and its commitment to serving others,” Callahan said.
